Ongoing Research Computational experiment

From birdsong to music.

01 THE STARTING QUESTION

How does natural
sound become
musical structure?

02

How does natural sound
become a perceptual object?

03

Where does perception change?

THE TENSION

Continuous detail.
Discrete structure.

TURDUS MERULA
One phrase · 2.45 s
Preparing the sound landscape…
RECORDED SOUNDHEIGHT = SPECTRAL LEVEL

Move the slider. Pitch, timing and timbre change together; the surface is recomputed from the rendered sound.

TWO POSSIBLE ROUTES
TO MUSICAL STRUCTURE

Abstraction Do we make music by simplifying natural sound?

or

Induction Derive musical structure from its regularities?

OUR FIRST STEP

Make the transition
testable.

Transform one phrase in controlled steps. Separate pitch, timing and timbre; compare flute and piano. Establish what MI distinguishes, then test whether those differences predict human judgments. This pilot probes model sensitivity. Perceptual object formation and induction remain open research questions.
